In the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the Heart of the World, women have always cared for the land, the memory, and the spiritual tradition. They keep the seeds, they know the plants that heal, and they know how the earth regenerates. This care has sustained life in these mountains for millennia.
The Indigenous Women’s Circle is a space where Kogui, Arhuaco, Wiwa, and Kankuamo women gather to weave, share a meal, and exchange living knowledge. The elder sisters hold the circle alongside the younger ones, weaving continuity across generations and across peoples. Each stitch holds memory, and each gathering plants what comes next.
What we weave together:
Lo que tejemos juntas:
Weaving & cosmology — the mochila, the ancestral arts, and the thought that travels in every thread.
Women’s leadership — women strengthening their communities and one another.
Medicinal plants — the knowledge of the plants that heal and nourish.
Regeneration — hands in the earth, caring for the ecosystems of the Sierra.
The circles have moved from the word to hands in the earth: red mangrove planted to restore the wetlands that shelter life, a communal garden of healing plants where seeds are kept alive, and the knowledge shared in the circle, now being documented so it keeps reaching the communities of the Sierra. We dream of a Casa de las Hermanas, a permanent home for women-led regeneration.
Walking alongside them: La Sierra Artist Residency, Úna, and Co-Flourish.
When Indigenous women gather, territories heal. When seeds are planted, the future is cared for. When memory is woven, identity remains. Every contribution strengthens this living network of care, culture, and regeneration.
